Exercises To Improve Your Memory

By Helena Reimer

Your memory is like a muscle that needs regular exercise in order to function at its best. The more you exercise it, the more you will be able to remember, and the easier the process will become.

Mental Exercises

But how can you exercise your memory? The answer is simple, you simply make a point to remember things that you normally wouldn’t. This can include things like the colors of a sign that you just passed while driving, or a phone number on a billboard. Reading books and trying to remember whole paragraphs word for word will greatly enhance your memory.

There are many mental exercises that you can make a part of your daily life, and the good thing is that they do not have to take up a lot of time, as you can work on them when you are doing mindless tasks.

Meditate

Meditation can help you to clear your mind and focus on what it is that you need to remember. In order for you to remember something you need to be able to focus on that piece of information for at least 8 seconds in order for it to be stored in your brain for long term use. Therefore meditation can help to build those muscles so that they are ready for when you need them.

Take Clear Pictures

Practice to take in all pieces of information, and pay attention to every little detail. You may not need all this information, but it will stimulate your brain and make it easier for times when it is crucial that you remember every little detail. You can do this with pictures, or with scenery as you are driving along the road.

Recite Poetry

Reciting poetry or songs can also help you to improve your memory, as it stimulates your brain and strengthens your memory muscles.

Do Things out of the Ordinary

If you have a routine and you are able to do things without thinking about it, consider switching up your routine so that your mind has something to concentrate on. This can include doing things with your non-dominant hand, like writing, brushing your teeth or holding your fork and knife in the other hands which you are not used to.

Physical Exercises

Physical exercise is just as important as mental exercise as it helps increase the flow of blood and oxygen which is needed by the brain and helps in the process of storing and retrieving information.

Physical exercise can also help you to reduce stress and help you to sleep better at night. Studies have shown that stress and fatigue can interfere with the process of storing and retrieving information.
